Do the hard thing, even when no one is watching.

Doing the hard things isn’t usually what we post about.

Spend a few minutes scrolling through social media, and everyone seems to be doing something great.

Someone is celebrating a promotion, speaking on a stage, closing a big deal, traveling somewhere beautiful, launching a business, receiving an award, or buying a house.

Maybe it’s the algorithm, or maybe we’re simply more likely to share the exciting parts of our lives.

Either way, it can sometimes feel like everyone is doing something absolutely amazing.

While I would never encourage anyone to deliberately mislead people, I understand the temptation to make an ordinary life look a little more extraordinary.

What we sometimes forget is that an amazing life is usually built by doing some very ordinary things.

Making the dreaded phone call.

Responding to the email you’ve been avoiding.

Focusing on the difficult task.

Trying again after something didn’t work.

None of those things make particularly exciting social media posts.

But they can slowly change your life.

Doing the Hard Things Sometimes Means Trying Again

Recently, I met a woman who told me that many years ago she took her real estate exam and failed by six points.

She never took it again.

She felt the test was too hard, and failing it confirmed for her that she wasn’t cut out for real estate.

It made me wonder:

How many times have we allowed one disappointment, rejection, or failure to permanently decide that something wasn’t for us?

How many times have we said, “I tried that,” when what we really mean is, “I tried it once”?

Sometimes doing the hard things simply means trying one more time.

The Picture Isn’t the Work

I’ve been in real estate for more than 22 years.

You may see me post a picture from a settlement table with smiling buyers or sellers.

That’s the picture.

But that’s not the work.

Behind that photograph may have been several buyers or sellers I spoke with who never made it to settlement. And with the client who did, there may have been 50 or even 100 conversations that eventually led to that smiling picture.

There were calls, follow-ups, problems, disappointments, and opportunities that went nowhere.

And then there was another conversation.

Another opportunity.

The visible moment is usually the smallest part of the story.

Yet sometimes we compare someone else’s visible moment to our unfinished work.

So don’t become so concerned with looking like you’re progressing that you stop doing the things that actually create progress.

Doing the Hard Things in Everyday Life

If your credit isn’t where it needs to be to buy a home, start rebuilding it.

If preparing your home for sale feels overwhelming, start with one closet or one repair.

If you didn’t pass the test, study and take it again.

If you’ve been putting off the conversation, have it.

If the project has been sitting unfinished for six months, give it thirty minutes today.

It may not be glamorous. It may not get any likes. No one may even know you did it.

But you will know.

Every time you keep a promise to yourself, finish something difficult, or get back up after disappointment, you build evidence that you can trust yourself.

Small actions rarely feel life-changing in the moment.

But imagine where they could put you a month or a year from now.

You may discover that you don’t need to make your life look more impressive.

You’re actually building the life you always wished you had.

Forget the optics for a moment.

Do the hard thing.

Then do the next one.

What’s one hard thing you’ve been avoiding that you know you need to do?
